If you're a homeowner in the SREC market, you may have heard the term "energy year" thrown around when it comes to selling SRECs. But what exactly does it mean?
An energy year is a period of 12 consecutive months that begins on the date that your solar panel system is interconnected to the grid. This timeframe is important when it comes to SREC sales because it determines when you can sell your earned credits.
Depending on the state in which you reside and the regulatory guidelines in place, you may be able to sell your SRECs on a rolling monthly basis, or you may have to wait until the end of your energy year to cash in. Understanding the ins and outs of your energy year can ensure that you maximize the financial benefits of your renewable energy system.
These are the energy years for the following markets:
  • Maryland: January to December
  • Washington DC: January to December
  • Ohio: January to December
  • Virginia: January to December
  • Pennsylvania: June to May
  • New Jersey: June to May
