What are retroactive RECS?

Retroactive RECs are generated from past energy production before your CSG contract has been signed.

Eligibility 

Until we register your system, we will be able to assess eligibility. 

Retroactive RECs are not applied in all states or markets. State programs have different retroactive credit policies. In some states, only solar produced after the filing date listed on the system's state registration can be credited for SRECs. In others, all solar power produced from the date the system is powered is considered eligible.

Retroactive REC policies by State Market

Maryland

In Maryland, SREC eligibility dates back to the solar energy system’s interconnection date, so long as the system’s registration is submitted to the Public Service Commission within the same calendar year.

Systems not submitted for registration within the same calendar year will be eligible for SRECs from January 1 of the year in which they are registered.

For example, a solar energy system interconnected in June 2017 and registered in October 2017 will receive credit back to June 2017; a system interconnected in June 2017 but registered in February 2018 will be eligible back to January 1, 2018.

New Jersey

Installers need to submit registration to the New Jersey Clean Energy Program within 14 business days of contract execution for installation. If registration is submitted to the state on time, all generation from interconnection onward is eligible for SRECs.

SRECs created from photovoltaic generation on or after July 23, 2012, are eligible for five years. SRECs created from photovoltaic generation prior to July 23, 2012, are eligible for three years. 

Ohio

In Ohio, SREC eligibility dates back to the solar energy system’s interconnection date, so long as the system is registered with the PUCO within that same month. Systems not registered within the same month will be eligible for SRECs from the first day of the month in which they are registered with Ohio PUCO.

For example, a solar energy system interconnected on January 1, 2017, and registered on January 20, 2017, will receive credit back to January 1, 2017. Alternatively, a system interconnected on February 5, 2017, but registered in March 2017, will be eligible back to March 1, 2017.

Pennsylvania

In Pennsylvania, SREC eligibility begins on the date that the system is registered with the Pennsylvania AEPS. PA systems are eligible to receive retroactive Virginia RECs.

Washington, DC

In both the District of Columbia and the State of Maryland, SREC eligibility dates back to the solar energy system’s interconnection date, so long as the system’s registration is submitted to the Public Service Commission within the same calendar year. Systems not submitted for registration within the same calendar year will be eligible for SRECs from January 1 of the year in which they are registered.

For example, a solar energy system interconnected in June 2017 and registered in October 2017 will receive credit back to June 2017; a system interconnected in June 2017 but registered in February 2018 will be eligible back to January 1, 2018.

Virginia

Virginia’s market allows for the selling of your retroactive SRECs produced backdating from the approved GATS registration date back to January of that calendar year. This means that if your system is registered on June 1st, 2022, you would be eligible to sell RECs back from Jan 1, 2022, at a discounted price. P
